Dufferin Grove

The Denison Family owned the land of Dufferin Grove. Their country villas were Toronto landmarks, that had titles such as “Dover Court” and “Rush Holme”, street names you might recognize today.
From 1834 onwards, as the city began to expand, the Denisons decided to clear the forest on their land, cultivate its fertile soil and thus attain great wealth. Eventually, in the 1880’s, when it became clear that the value of the estates lay in housing development, the crops were replaced by rows of houses and the Dufferin Grove area was developed. See if you can recognize some landmarks in these historic photos dating back to 1890.

Dufferin Grove is nestled between College, Bloor, Dufferin and Ossington. The hub of activity in this community is located in Dufferin Grove Park where a community support group, the ‘Friends of Dufferin Grove Park‘ organizes most events and activities. Residents enjoy the local produce from the Farmer’s Market, a community pizza oven, basket ball courts, an ice rink, campfire pits, wifi and more!  I particularly enjoy the very delicious and affordable Friday Night Suppers where neighbours convene on the grass or picnic tables to chat and eat. Perfect for young families, couples can enroll in “Dusk Dances”, as their children attend plays at the Clay and Paper Theatre. If you’re a dog owner, you’re likely to bump into several likewise dog lovers. They can be seen huddled together watching their dogs play at various shifts throughout the day.

Most homes in Dufferin Grove were built in the late 19th and early 20th century. Their architectural styles vary from noble Edwardian and Victorians semis, to grand detached homes, and to charming English-style cottages.

“Not so” Hidden Gems: The Caledonian, Hadley’s, The Common, The Depanneur, Comedy Bar, The Brass Taps, Lalibella, La Fromagerie, Mitzi’s, Black Skirt, YMCA, Octopus garden.
